Texas Chainsaw Massacre '74 Review

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre '74

It had been awhile since my last viewing of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and in that time I had went to see the Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake. So I couldn’t really make a decision on whether or not the remake held up to the original, so all of this had prompted me to go out and view the original again. But before I make my decision lets get some of the plot stuff out of the way. Semi based on a true story, when the fact is it doesn’t have many true facts in it, TCM follows a group of teens as they track to one of the characters, Franklin‘s, 9who is in fact a crippled) old family home. The reason they are going back is not known when it fact it seems that they are just driving around for no reason. Soon, just like in all horror movies, the group is split up and two of them find their way to an old farm house, where they are soon taken out by a man with a chainsaw who seems to be wearing a mask made out of human flesh. The rest soon start searching for the missing members which leads to a chase outside with Leatherface in tow. It is then down to Sally as she tries to escape from the demented family. Tobe Hoopers directorial debut is another film that is in the ranks of such films as Halloween and the original Night Of The Living Dead. And just like those films I don’t see why this film is held in such high regard. Yes, I’ll admit, it was a trend setter and influenced many other films, but when it comes to the actual film there really isn’t much to praise. You don’t get to know the characters enough to like them all that well, not much on suspense (from me at least), and very little blood that I could remember. When you really look at it it’s pretty much a bland film, like good looking food with not much taste to it. It’ age also really shows as well. I felt at the end if I had accomplished nothing and the last minutes seemed like a mish mash of scenes that in the end really didn’t go together. With this all being said, I have to admit that the remake is in fact much better, read my review on it to see why I say this. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is followed by which has to be one of the worst follow ups ever, the Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2.
