A box office smash in the summer of ‘94 when it came out, Stargate has yet to receive the recognition and cult status is deserves. This Sci-Fi epic could go up into the ranks along with films such as Star Wars and Star Trek if it wasn’t for some tired premises towards the end of the film. It has an original storyline that uses such things as time travel, alternate worlds, alien races, and breathes new life into the genre. It all starts when a time portal device called a Stargate is dug up in Egypt. A high security government facility finds a young man, James Spader, who has the ability to figure out the secret behind the gate open it’s doors. He soon does and along with a military team led by Kurt Russel go through the gate to find out where it leads to. Of course they fond a whole new civilization and from there chaos ensues leading up to a battle with Ra, who built the portals. Along the way another plot twist evolves to where Kurt Russel must blow up the Stargate due to the hostile lifeworks that arrive. A very believable part of the film that I find interesting is the language the alien race speaks. There is no speaking multiple languages so you can understand them, like in other movie where out of no where they can speak English with no problem. Instead they speak this native tongue throughout the film which brings in the use of subtitles. The film does have one down point though. Around the middle of the film when the ship land and they begin to fight they’re presence it feels like a whole new movie and that the original adventure feeling of the first half is lost in the mish mash of action. It plays out like a War Of The Worlds type film. Besides from that this movie is a modern classic that any person interested in space travel and alternate worlds would love. Oh yea, did I mention how cool the space travel sequences are. You have to see it as it gives a little insight on what traveling through a space portal would be like.
