The Howling Review

The Howling

Just after An American Werewolf In London was released came this horror gem. For the last couple years there had been a slump in the horror genre when it came to monster movies, werewolf movies were one of the types not being shown much interest in. But with the release of An American Werewolf in London, which became a major hit, and then with the release of the Howling werewolf movies were back with a vengeance. I’m not going to compare it to An American werewolf in London for the reasons of one I have yet to see it and from what I have heard maybe people think that this is the superior of the two movies. It starts with a reporter coming in contact with a stalker which almost turns fatal. She then is told to take a vacation to a secluded resort in the country, to which is she does with her husband. Once there strange howling in the night awakens the couple and it soon becomes clear that the glen is inhabited by werewolf’s, them also being the towns people. The Howling also hold one of the best transformation scenes, if not the best, of all time. It actually shows the transformation happening without cutting away every 2 seconds. The special effects alone make this movie a must see. This is the most realistic looking werewolf I have ever seen, no lie. While watching make sure to look for all the hidden nods to other werewolf films. The only done side to The Howling is it being the inspiration for the countless sequels that follow, none of them having anything to do with the first and one of them actually in truth having nothing to do with werewolves at all, there is one just sort of thrown in at the end fro good measure. Werewolf fan or not no horror collection should not have the Howling included it’s array of special effects make it worth owning alone. But that’s not to overshadow it’s strong script and top notch acting.
